St. Gallen grew around the Abbey of St Gall, founded in the 8th century. According to the traditions it was built at the site of the hermitage of Irish missionary St. Gall, who according to legend had established a small settlement in the wilderness -the legend said with the aid of a bear. A bear is till this day the symbol of the city.
St.Gallen is mainly famous for the Abbey of Saint Gall. The abbey district was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Abbey Library is Switzerland’s oldest library and one of the world‘s oldest and largest monastery libraries. The Abbey’s library contains books from the 9th century, including the oldest book written in the German language, the“Abrogans” from 911.

I will definitely get back in Spring as the city is worth to visit again, just with a little bit warmer weather.
